Tracking for NA dogs

Dont over do the tracking aspect of the training. It may and can lead to pointing problems.

Which I saw today in a lot of dogs at he training day. Below is not the rule book but is an

outline of what your dog basically needs to do and if it does it well it should be fine.

Remember an NA dog must swim twice (not retrieve and style doesn't count)

It must demonstrate the ability to concentrate and follow a track for some distance (it doesn't) have to have to bring it back or point it)

Last it must point the points can be flash points but they count longer ones are better and handle relatively well.

Not being gun shy and having a good temperment helps as well.

re: tracking

When Pam tested Fox for NA, the dog had never seen a pheasant and never ran a track.  Yet the dog did the track without a hitch.  We tried to get Fox exposed to birds in the field to concentrate on the aspects of pointing.  We also did a lot of play retrieving to make the whole process fun.  These are puppies afterall.  Quill was a different story.  He was tracking on his own at three months.  I found this out when I would dispose of some critter in my woodlot and he would disappear later and bring the darn thing back.  Do not push the puppies too hard at the NA level in my opinion.

I agree with Rob.
