QuailThis is my first year raising quail for training and as a result have a few questions. 1) My Johnny house is up off the ground so the birds are on wire. Do I need to provide them with grit? If so, do I head to agway and get a 50lb bag? 2) Currently my birds are a touch over 9 weeks old. How do I get them to begin to recall into the funnel and at what age should I start? They were already good flyer when I got them. Thanks!

re: quail
Michael: They will need the grit. I simply release mine keeping several males inside to whistle the rest back in the evening. I was able to keep them over several seasons as the winters were mild. I occasionally put grass into the pen area for them to peck at. I did have trouble with red squirrels at first and one weasle. Hawk predation is also a constant problem. Rob
re: qauil
Thanks Rob! Grit that I buy, and can I just shovel up grit from the edge of the road? Also how old were your birds when you let them out?
re: quail
We bought grit from Agway. Both quail and chucker (and ducks) eat it. The quail were in the pen for two weeks before we let them out. We had two vocal males that recalled the rest. Many just hung around the pen for days before going back in.
Don't forget if they are
Don't forget if they are young or old to mist them regularly (with a little spray pump) this help them fly great no matter the weather conditions. Wet mornings, light rain is not a problem. Try it.
re: Quail
Boy, if my wife didn't think I was crazy before, when she sees me down there putting hairspray on the birds she is really going to thing I am nuts!!!! :)
Seriously, sounds like a great tip. I will give it a try!
